Hiking
Ben Cruachan
A much loved Argyll classic, Ben Cruachan is one of Scotland’s highest peaks. Several peaks form a horseshoe around the water feature of the Cruachan Reservoir. From the ridge and Ben Cruachan summit, you can spot Loch Etive to the west and Loch Awe to the south. Much of the Southern Scottish Highlands sprawls before you – amongst the best views in Scotland.
Beinn Lora
It’s well worth the climb up the hill from the foot of Beinn Lora for the stunning panorama of coast, islands and mountains. Picnic tables at wonderful vantage points give you a chance to catch your breath and take in the scenery and the Eagle's Eyrie viewpoint is an ideal photo opportunity.
Isle of Kerrera
The Isle of Kerrera is situated at the mouth of Oban bay and acts as a physical breakwater for this important west coast harbour. To access Kerrera you travel 2.5 miles south from Oban to Gallanach where a ferry crosses the 600 metres of the Sound of Kerrera between the Scottish mainland and the island itself (5 minute journey). There is a vehicle exclusion policy on the island, except for those of the locals, making it a walker’s paradise.
The Sheiling for Deirdre and Naoise
A gleaming gold statue of two lovers is the centrepiece of a memorial garden laid 1500 ft up on the slopes of Beinn Ghlas.
The Shieling tells the tale of Deirdre of the Sorrows, who was said to have fled to Glen Etive with her lover Naoise. A love story famed in Irish mytholodogy, the hillside retreat has one of the best views in Argyll.
Easdale Island
Wander around the pretty cottages and old slate quarries then climb to the highest point on the tiny but fascinating car-free island of Easdale. Leave plenty of time to soak up the atmosphere, watch for wildlife or visit the museum or cafe.
Biking
The Great Glen Way
The Great Glen is actually a series of glens filled by lochs which are linked by the Caledonian Canal. Cycling the Great Glen Way from west to east is the most popular choice but many people choose to start from Inverness too. The route is waymarked and there are some challenging sections where the route climbs high above the banks of Loch Ness. A mountain bike is required for this route.
Ben Nevis Loop (43.5 miles)
The trail sneaks through some of Scotland’s finest scenery, nudging up against Ben Nevis, Britain’s highest peak, in the early stages, and then squeezes past the Mamores and the Grey Corries massifs later in the day.
Loch Leven Circuit
A 21 mile circuit around Loch Leven - a narrow sea loch surrounded by mountains. This route can be started from a number of points including Kinlochleven, Glencoe village, Ballachuish or North Ballachulish.
Sightseeing
Oban Distillery
Oban Distillery is both one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland and one of the smallest with just two pot stills. Pre-dating the town of Oban, it was originally established in 1794 by brothers John and Hugh Stevenson. It underwent a refurbishment in the 1890s and there has been little change to the present buildings since then. The distillery’s tours offer visitors the chance to witness the traditional craftsmanship of whisky production first-hand before enjoying complimentary drams of the Oban 14 year old West Highland Malt.
Dunollie Castle
The Museum, Castle and Grounds provide an exciting journey of discovery, where visitors of all ages can learn about the history of the castle, the noble MacDougall family and life on the west coast of Scotland through exciting exhibitions and displays.
Dunstaffnage Castle
On an immense rock overlooking the Firth of Lorn near Oban stands the remains of one of the oldest stone castles in Scotland and the former stronghold of the MacDougalls.
St Conan's Kirk
St Conan’s Kirk in the village of Lochawe attracts visitors from all over the world with its magical lochside setting and easily reached location. From the road the Kirk gives few clues about the amazing architecture both inside and out.
Kilchurn Castle
Kilchurn Castle was a fortress, a comfortable residence and later a garrison stronghold, and contains the oldest surviving barracks on the British mainland. Its five-storey tower house dominates the complex, with a lower hall, courtyard and barracks below.
Inveraray Castle
The ancient Royal Burgh of Inveraray is located 60 miles north west of Glasgow by Loch Fyne in an area of spectacular natural beauty. The ruggedness of the highland scenery serves as a spectacular backdrop for the sheltered tidal Loch, beside which nestles the present Castle built between 1746 and 1789.
Golf
Taynuilt Golf Club
Taynuilt Golf Club is a stunning 9-hole parkland course which was founded in 1987. The Course is surrounded by majestic scenery located close to the base of Ben Cruachan and with stunning views up Loch Etive.
Dalmally Golf Club
Picturesque Dalmally Golf Club is nestled between views of Ben Cruachan and Ben Lui and bounded by the rolling waters of the Orchy River. There are many mature trees and interesting water hazards and bunkers on the nine-hole parkland golf course.
Glencruitten Golf Club (18-hole)
Glencruitten Golf Course is situated on the outskirts of the picturesque seaside town of Oban.
Fishing
Loch Etive & Loch Awe
We have an ideal location for the keen angler, including sea fishing for the cod, spurdog and thornbacks in the tidal waters of Loch Etive and fly fishing for salmon and sea trout in the River Awe to name just a few. We have enough parking space for your boat as well.
